It was used to be general knowledge that it wasn't possible to grow large pumpkins in the south. Well the last few years has blown that myth out of the water. Large pumpkins, even by Northern standards, have come from Australia, Spain and the Bahamas. Results from the Southern U.S. have been rather small though. Why? It's been proven that it CAN be done in the heat. Is it a lack of growers? Trying to apply Northern growing techniques to the South? Is it the growing climate i.e. humidity? Pests and diseases? I suspect a combination of all those with an emphasis on improper growing technique for the conditions. Thoughts? How long will it be before there's a 1000# pumpkin grown South of the Mason-Dixon line?

Well, maybe it's true we just can't grow anything big...except for Wallace Simmons. Guess we'll find out in the Fall who's got what and who does not.
