Ok another topic,
If a grower was to out cross a Squash and want the Squash color to be dominant, would you not be better to out cross to a bright orange, like the 670 Daigle etc. rather than going to a neutral or dull color.

If you mean cross the seeds for bright orange then sure folks should do it. There are a lot of growers who want to win the Howard Dill award & watch the genetics to get it that way. In Southern Ohio Jamie Drum puts a lot of work into creating a deep orange pumpkin.
A lot of folks don't want to go backwards & bring some old Mombert genetics back into the seed pool because it didn't produce the monsters that are being grown now.
But if what a lot of growers believe is correct then much of the larger weights we see now if from both seed crosses & the newer fertilizers to create a "super" seed.
If you could somehow have a large number of 567.5's now to create a newer seed stock & use all the different fertilizer, root stimulants, soil conditioners & growth stimulants we use now the 567.5 might have been looked at like a pumpkin that grows HUGE deep orange pumpkins not just very large deep orange pumpkins.
Now on the other side of the fence if we start breeding for a deep green, blue squash using all the different fertilizer, root stimulants, soil conditioners & growth stimulants & care we put into the orange ones the future of the squash might be much different than where it's heading now.

Some offspring of pumpkin/squash crosses i looked at are either green or orange ( But I dont know really much of them) so for the first moment I can imagine that an outcross with an orange beauty may result in less problems with colouring of the resulting squash. But if the aim of the outcross is a bigger squash, the crossing partner should primarily have the traits for growth. ( And specimens like 1610 Lieber, 1663 Zoellner etc... could have both traits)

I bet if you get a good dark greenie and pollinate w/ the 1610, grow out a bunch of those seeds, self pollinate or cross pollinate w/ the plants whose babies show up the greenest, you'd get at least a 25% chance of the seeds from the second generation growing a WR Squash!

I think the problem is to have a 1610 !

I think I might grow a 767 Johansson [http://www.bigpumpkins.com/displayphoto.asp?pid=4653&gid=1] and cross it with a 1421 Stelts this year. Sound like a good idea?

Do it Dutch! I'd try the 767 if I had it.

My question is the pigment a similar genetic trait in both a squash and a bright orange pumpkin ?
Does a neutral colored pumpkin pick up a "green" gene from a squash or a "pigment" gene ?
