OK... seems like for the most part everyone has aired out their opinions on the previos bunch of posts. Definitly a lot of different ideas, which isn't surprising, as squash sure are a challenge...

For this post, I thought for those who are interested in a "let's all plant the same seed in 2014" contest, please simply post your top 3 choices for seed. To the best of my knowledge, Shymanski isn't growing any over the winter, so lets say list top 3 seeds either proven, or new from this year, and lets assume that there are at least 50 or so of that seed so there are enough to go around.... obviously it would be easier just to have everyone pick their 1 top seed, but i fear we might end up with 20 different seeds. By picking 3, my hope is that at least a few might stand out that most people are interested in/willing to plant, and then we can keep things moving forward and take a second vote on just the top seeds picked. we'll also get a feel for just how many people are interested in being part of this.

Given that the whole point of this is to try and have someone grow a green monster, when picking seeds, lets all ask ourselves the following- "do I think the seeds that I am picking, if planted enough, can grow a 1500-2000 pound squash?"

The 89* Shymanski is a good one also and would do the effort that Mark put in to it justice

see it as the green snow ball...........

ps I don;t think you will find enough 800* neily seeds and also not enough 848* mackenzie seeds (they are "too" old and are less advanced in genetics)

It's so hard to pick a top 3. Lots of advanced genetics to try. If I were to plant today I'd go with:

717 Holub 2013
1175 Holub 2013
1264 Pierpont 2013

Slightly biased, but there it is. :)

Iwan If none grows squash as everyone states then why would it be hard to find the seeds I voted on?

If none grows them it can be done. but we are talking about
50+ of the same seeds or so, To be grown by all. I don't think one could find that many left of the 800* and the 848*

there are more 848's left than you think, just need to know how to find them.

No holds barred, I would plant the following...
750 Hester (because I am biased, obviously)
800 Nielly
and then either Scott's 1175 or the 1264 Pierpont depending upon availability.

looks like so far we're at 5 votes for Edwin's 1264, and 3 votes for the 1175 Holub... and a couple of others have 2 votes...

Has the 1264 Pierpont been opened up and did it have a good seed count?

It has been opened up. Opened about a week ago and I don't have good news on the seed count. There were only 13 mature, good seeds.I will be posting some of the interior pics soon. It had the smallest interior cavity that I've ever seen. About 24" wide by 11". Blossom end was 8" thick. With the thickest walls measuring over 17" thick. I'm hoping to make contact with serious squash growers who grow multiple plants that would be interested in growing the seed to push the squash genetics to the next level and make a good cross for the future. That throws one grower out for contacting. I was hoping the 1264 Pierpont had many and was one seed I wanted to grow among the other three I plan on growing....

That's a shame Edwin. Lots of growers willing to grow it too. I know we've had the same luck with seeds. Our 1233 (996 x self) only had 30 seeds in it. Maybe we could trade a seed with each other? Just a thought. Email me at gvgo@i-zoom.net if interested.

Cheers,

I'd be interested in pollen or a cutting for a clone if any of the 1264's make it to the southeast. Sure would like to take that 29% heavy and cross it to a 27% heavy. You lucky few keep me in mind come spring. brotherdave01@aol.com

Farming- a bunch of catastrophies that result in a lifestyle

I'm the new girl here so forgive spelling arithmetic and all other related squash Faupax....
I have 'Bell'. She went 200 pounds at DAP 30. I had to pick her due to frost, she was whopping along at 5-8 pounds a day in mid Sept, still actively growing plant and dead green. her walls were 6" thick on average, the blossom end was eight. I've tested 10 seed and everyone has sprouted. I've got more than enough if someone wants to think about putting her in this. I bought the initial seed off the Howard Dill site this spring so I don't have information on lineage. She is selfed so she is all Bell. This is the same plant that set the green monster I early season which I then screwed up by not checking some rot on the nub at the blossom end. This was a vigorous plant, all total it threw 27 girls- male pollinators were an issue, but this could be due to poor soil. All girls set and stayed set and growing, at one point this plant was supporting 4 squash and all of them were gaining 3" a day when I winnowed them down to Bell. Oh, also, Bell was on tertiary, yes, a tertiary. If anyone wants some my email is leisha@infinitilogistics.com I'd love to be able give something back as everyone has been so generous with seed for next year. (I'm going to get to grow a 89 Shymanski!!! WOOOHOOOO)
