what do experienced growers do differently for squash? Are squash more prone to splits? aborts? How do you prevent them?

They can be hard to pollinate for some reason..

Carlson and Petersen have brought some green squash to the Anamosa weighoff several times over the past few years. They all seem to have extremely long stems, which will help eliminate stress on the vine.

They require more shade than pumpkins. But in the fall, expose them to more sunlite so they will green up.

I don't treat them any differently. They do however seem to be harder to get fruit to pollinate.

I planted mine this year in a shady location,which should be cooler.I hope to find out if this helps.I saw Matt Debaccos plants(kins) he grew in 8 hours of sun.So this encouraged me to try some shadier cooler spots in my patch.

I find squash harder to grow, period. I don't think they can take as much heat as pumpkins and it is hot here. I plant both squash and pumpkins every year, and every year I get kins -- only had luck with one squash. But I still try, frankly, this year I only want a squash for the seeds so I can grow again -- this is the last of my seeds!

Interesting that so many people say they are hard to get a fruit set on. When I've grown them in the past I could only really count on a self pollination to have more than a 50% chance. On a couple of plants(can't remember which ones) I only was able to self pollinate.

I think that genetics and weather are the two biggest players here. I don't see a difference between the two as far as being easier to grow. However, I see a difference in genetics and size.
