Has anyone grown a 971 Hebb 02? Did it throw green? I am looking for a good non 895.5 Hester to cross with an 834 Gadberry and just happen to have a 971 Hebb. Any other suggestions, that I might be able to trade for? Thanks!

Dale,

I will be working with the 900.8 Lyons to cross around with the 834. I think the other 834 plants will be selfed again. I hope our seed pack made it through to you ok? It will be fun to compete with you again next fall @ Canby!

Gerry,

Yes and thanks! I am getting ready to fire off a thank you note, and the reason I am enquiring about a cross is that I got these beauties today! Thanks so much for the trade, I am going green in '04!! I think I am going to give the 971 Hebb a go, It's a 990 Hebb x 810 Dill. A bit worrysome of the potential Orange from the Dill for the offspring, but could make a good seed! Thanks again Gerry. BTW...My wife got her PT degree from EWU there in Cheney, and I used to teach and coach at Mead High School at the north end of Spokane. Dale

Dale,
I would be careful with the 810 Dill in your squash cross as we grew the 810 and it throws deep orange heavy pumpkins, the offspring three generations later are still nice and orange! I have a spare 703* Smith you can have if you need a squash pollinator, Kevin gave me several in a trade a couple seasons ago. I went to Mead JR High and Riverside High, teachers are great!

Gerry,

Thanks, I might just hit you up for the 703, but in trade. I have a few seeds that you might be interested in. I'll e-mail you. Mead Jr High, I coached football there my first year in Spokane. Is Riverside the new High School in the Mead district? I left there in '94 before the new one was done. Dale

I can tell you with my experience of studying and studying pumpkin backgrounds over the years, if a squash is the female and the male pollinator is a pumpkin (orange) the offspring from this cross will always be orange for the first generation. You can bet the farm on it. If the female is a pumpkin and the male cross is a squash anything could show up the first generation, either pumpkin or squash.

PrettyPumpkin,

Thanks for that info. I think I may not plant the 971, though the AGGC has different info (990 Hebb x 875 Dill) about the 971 Hebb than what the CWPGA sent me (990 Hebb x 810 Dill)with the seed. I won it in their raffle last year. I am also rethinking my desire to go with something non 895.5 to pollinate with. I will probably go with a 552 or 962 Sherwood. Either of these paired with the 834 super duper awesome green Gadbury would be an nice cross.

wasn't the 990* hebb a 616*corkum X 780 eaton ie squash female, pumpkin male and it grows both

forgot to state, both the squash and pumpkin have to be fairly pure strains. Any parents that have some of the other in the background could show at anytime. tonight I have checked with some of the best growers with many years of growing experience, we all agree with my earlier post.

So it is better to use a male polinator from a known squash plant on my split plants?

Study the Pumpkin/Squash crosses made with the 895.5 and then look at the color shape deviation in first, then second year off-spring, the mother seems to give up a shade of green or three in first year offspring if crossed with a male pumpkin. Selfing adds, or at least equals the deep/recessive color in the majority of 1st generation off-spring, second generation selfs and third generation cross backs to the origional mother cut the random "Orange" gene pool next to nothing. Summary, plant second or third generation selfed squash seeds then self, sibb, or cross back and you have increased your chances of the fruits off-spring of throwing consistantly green/shape by a level of magintude that is a dominate trait hybred.

I could be wrong on the color thingy?

Well, I'm not about to correct some of the best growers with many years of growing experience...that would be like shooting myself in the foot...but my 568* (738Stellpflug97* x 1092Burke98pkn) threw beautiful real squash this year.

LIpumpkin I believe you. Lets say the odds are pretty good against that happening, but it does happen.
