I will be planting my 879 squash from 1998, it is getting old, and needs to be given some respect. G is growing it also I believe, as is a few others. I will be growing the 717 of mine also to cross it into the 879, trying to put some more true green into the genetic line. 879 came from a pumpkin (Andersen 815), but that fruit threw half and half...

I wont talk about that other brighter color in the squash board.. Just totally disrespectful to my green buddies..

2004 is the year of green...

Codger,
If you want a nice orange pumpkin grow that 856 Hester. At least that was the color of my 856 fruit this year. If you are looking for green you'd better look elsewhere.

2 years ago I grew a 704 Garrell lookin fer pumpkin when I took it to the state fair they thought it was the bigest cantalope they had ever seen, 180lbs round, green and the cantaloping was perfect.

If I don't get any more squash seed I might have to try that one again.
I have talked to people that also grew the 704 and they got pumpkins

I'll probably grow the 895* as my main squash plant with the 970* nesbitt and my 535* wolf as backups/pollinators.

Yes, watch out for the 856. It is doing the same thing my 611 and the 986 did and throwing nice orange fruit. Big orange fruit, but orange none the less. So far i am 100 % green with the 498, 675, 895, 403, and the 320. If you have a 986 and want a big orange fruit, it is an unsung seed. A real sneaker that is starting to age a little. The 682 and 662 both came off the same plant with less than 100 leaves and 350 sq. feet.

I will take the orange from the 856 also if it's a nice one. It is still very worth growing. I will self it.
I don't have your other seeds Brett.
I really like the Blair, Kilbert, Smith, Rockwell, and Stellfplug seeds/plants/green also. Plus some other ones that I don't have.
We are getting more of a selection to grow now. Which is really nice for all of us that like the green.

I'm gonna start a bunch and see what I like best. 895.5 Hester, my 576 Michalec, 535 Wolf, and 545 Cramer, as well as one from the 300" fruit that split on my 895.5 last year that was pollinated with the 837 Thorson plant. I'll get down to the best two at transplant time. I'm also looking at the 498 Hester 00* because I have a bunch of them.

Our 895.5 Hester was an awesome plant, it took a 28 degree frost hit on Sept. 12th and recovered very well. We lost 2/3 of the plant and yet she still packed on another 140 pounds. The plant seemed to take it's sweet time in throwing a female out on the main vine though (July 25th), and sent out robust tertiaries (sinks) after every pruning. Squash seem to be happy in our humble little patch compared to our pumpkins, or it could just be the secrete foliar recipe concotion Dani helped me develope for just for them! We haven't set our 2004 plans in stone yet, but the 708 LaRue is looking more and more like a sure thing for the Pumpkins!
