I've decided to grow a green squash for the 1st time in 13 years...last year was a fluke. After all the talk of going for a 1000 green(not to mention this new message board), I think the level of competition will be it's highest ever. During the late 80's and early 90's it was believed by many that a squash would hit 1000 before pumpkins. I still believe the only reason this didn't happen was due to a lack of growers jumping into this class...myself included after '91. Now with the push from Wayne, Rocky, Glenn and others, it seems the 1st true green 1000 is very near.
Perhaps the lack of interest WAS due to poor seed selection....if there was a "green 723" I have to believe others would have jumped on the bandwagon a long time ago. So.... who is jumping into this game for the 1st time... or coming back to it after many years? I'm guessing we will see many more green at the weigh-off's this October. Only question now is what to plant? "The Green Hornet"

I grew a greenie last year by accident, too. Funny, though, because I fell in love with the idea of growing a Hulk. California squash record is only 777 (Bob Troy). Seems reasonable that a new record could grow on my half acre. Therefore I am planning to grow 2 squash, and 3 pumpkin plants this season. I am sacraficing a lawn to do it, but I never use that lawn anyway.

Hey Green Hornet... Now that you are "back", heehee, what greenie have you had your eyes on to put into the patch to grow that first thousand pounder? Watch out, Joe Pukos is hot on your trail, and he is searching for that green 723 as we speak!

Hey Mr. Green Hornet..seeing that we live in the same County, please allow me to be your trustworthy kung fu companion Kato (formerly played by Bruce Lee). I could protect you and your patch from all evil pumpkin growers and perhaps you could share a few squash growing tips with me? :-)Joe P.

Joe,
Didn't Bruce "KATO" Lee do all the butt kicking on the old TV shows.....while the green hornet just stood looking in awe? I'm guessing the same thing will happen this year in Livingston County...LOL!!! Your first assignment as "Kato" is to locate the next "723 Green".....then tell me what that seed is!!!

Soon all the World will see that the untried yet humble beauty 834* (03) will arise to the top to concor (sp) the paultry norm of average awesomness as the first true 1000# Squash Super Hero....

There is an 895 in the green jacket raffle, along with many 895 offspring and self crossses. for 10 bucks for one and 20 bucks for 3, might be worth a shot.. I know.. I know.. it will suck if you end up with something other than the 895, like one of those darn 1260 Wiers, 898 Knauss's, or Pukos 805's , just to mention a few.. I wouldnt underestimate the power of that 675 Hester either, which there are 2 of those inthe raffle in seperate lots!

Or, if you are after green soon, and want to pick your price (kinda like that one dot com place), the PGPGA seed Auction is Sunday night, at 730 in a chatroom right here on the worlds greatest website , BigPumpkins.com. In that auction there are two 895 offsprings available, not one, but two seperate Gadberry 834's and paired with one of them is my 717 selfed 895! The other Gadberry is paired with my oldie, but goodie, 879, which will represent my green endeavors this year in my patch. Currently, the Gadberry seed pairings with the ROckwell seeds are very reasonably priced, as I believe they will be Sunday evening also. Might want to check out the auction!

Ok, green train possy...
This season I am officially planning on planting the 756.8 Kennedy 03* and my own seed, the 176.5 Atencio 03* (854 Wentzell 02 X self). I also have a 703 Smith* that I might grow as a pollinator, but I am unsure so far. Kevin told me it works great as a pollinator, but has had trouble setting fruit. Has anybody out there ever grown a fruit from the 703 Smith*?
