I would be grateful if any squash/GPC experts could spare the time to look at my diary entry and advise. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=327822

Tricky one. That's the problem with squamkins. It obviously started out as a squash, but I think if it was left a few more weeks till the weigh-off I would call it a pumpkin.

I am not an expert, but the rules do say one solid color of green, blue or grey. I see some yellow starting. I have seen some weighed as a squash with way more yellow or cream color than that. It seems to be up to the judges on that particular day in my opinion. sorry I really cant help with your question.

That one should be considered a pumpkin, and I think it will continue to change color.

Looks sunburned... I dont think you've got pumpkin genetics there I think you have sunburn. Cover it asap and hope for the best. Bring those pics and show the judges. Hopefully they can see that it is a squash genetically, which is what should matter even though they may say "cosmetically it's no longer a squash". I would rule it a sunburned squash.
Interesting!

According to the GPC rules, that should be judged a pumpkin. Sorry

Lee, There was someone who floated the idea of ruling your 1652 a pumpkin. That should tell you how ridiculous the squash/pumpkin designations are. Thomas

By rule, it a pumpkin Gritty. The genetics of the 1521 Barlow/Jacobus is 2118 Jutras x self, which has pumpkin in it. You can argue all you want, show the judges pictures, but in the end, it NEEDS to be judged on what is in front of them. If it's sunburned, it will cantaloupe. I don't believe it is sunburned, I believe it is turning orange, but time will tell.

Canteloping has more to do with humidity, I believe. Dry air. Yes, it will be up to the judges...
The age old question of the "word as it's written" vs "the intention of the words when they were written" is not one I feel the need to argue about. That's between the GPC and the judges.

Not against anything you're saying.
I may start a new thread about the canteloping though... Interesting.

Thank you all for your comments, I've posted another photo showing the colour change more advanced, it will have to be entered as a pumpkin now for sure. I didn't realize there was a danger of going orange at such a late stage. I will ensure all squash are well-covered in future years to try and mitigate the problem.

Squash are constantly changing color, which can be scary as you get closer to the weigh off. Keep your fingers crossed that area greens back up or cantaloupes over if you're hoping to show it as a squash. As it stands from that pic, it would be a pumpkin, but it still could change.

As a final footnote to this saga; weighed today as an exhibition pumpkin, went just 1% heavy at 789 lbs.
