Before you get mad, I'm not being 100 percent serious, but this topic is pretty interesting to me.

This topic came up as a result of discussion in my last post, when Wile Coyote brought up the 1326 Young/Rhodes, a 2145 offspring that was deemed a squash at the weigh off and by other esteemed squash growers. From looking at the photo, it has what I would describe as a very pale grey-green complexion, but scraping the skin revealed a very solid green underneath.

Most 2145 progeny are like this, just to a lesser extent. If you look at the progeny on pumpkin fanatic, almost all of them green up to an extent, usually from the bottom. The 1326 did the same thing, just over the entire fruit.

Here's the kicker. The 2166 Cutrupi 2018 looks exactly the same to me, at least from the front. I bet if you rubbed off the skin, it would have been green underneath. Pumpkin fanatic only has pictures of the front, so I have no idea how orange the rear was, or if it was another case of a 2145 throwing a full green fruit.

I'll post a link to the 2166 Cutrupi. There's a miniscule amount of orange on the front that could probably disqualify it,

The 2166 Cutrupi is one of the selfed 2145s I would consider pollinating with an 1109.

Alot is gonna depend on the site it is weighed at. But, GPC says no orange/pink can be present, otherwise it is classified a pumpkin. And rule of thumb is: "If there is any question on the specimen's color, it shall be classified as pumpkin." That said, I was at a weighoff a couple of years ago where there was a dark green squash with no cantalouping, but it had a tiny spot of orange on the back end and it was called a pumpkin. The grower wasn't very happy about the decision. I am considering growing a 1326 this year. I also have the 2030 Tobeck which I'm curious about too since the 1935 Jutras that pollinated it lost its' color and was called a pumpkin.

Just to clarify, I don't think the 1326 will throw a squash, it'll likely throw a pumpkin with heavy greening, so don't grow the 1326 if you want it to throw a squash, chances are it'll have some orange. But it might be a good candidate for getting some 2145 genes into the squash gene pool

Yeah, I definitely won't be growing it and expecting it to throw a squash. I may have some extra space and it would be interesting just to see what it would grow.
Looking through the list of pumpkins weighed this last year, there was a 715.5 Bakken grown from the 1326 that classified as a pumpkin. Wonder if there is any pics of it.

Looks like a "squash" also.

But I bet its the pink/green color scheme genetically, even if its only showing half its genetics. It would be cool if this gray-green would breed true. Its possible with hubbards, right? But, has a strain of this color ever been isolated in AG's? Not that I know of.

The 2166 had lots of pink/orange color to it. Not even remotely close to being a squash.

Thanks Jay. As I said, I've only seen a picture of the front. Haven't seen any other angles.

To be considered a squash, the fruit needs to be 100% green, gray or blue. Small amounts of cream are allowed, in the valleys. The 2166 had a lot of orange on the stem side, it's not even close to being considered a squash. If you can see ANY orange in a picture, there is a lot of orange in real life. And any orange on a fruit at all, makes it a pumpkin no
