Trying my hand at a squash this year for the first time. Got an 1109 at auction a couple days ago. Are there any differences between growing a Pumpkin vs a Squash that I need to be aware of?

Ive noticed the nodal rooting can be a little bit more vigorous in certain pumpkins lineages vs the squash Ive tried, but I cant speak for the 1109. In other words in my limited experience they seem to (genetically) lean a bit more towards vegetative or auxin dominated growth rather than roots/reproduction or cytokine type growth. So, for example, adding too much nitrogen would shoot yourself in the foot relatively more with a squash than with a pumpkin. A bit speculative, & not sure if anyone else would consider this to be true.

Josh - In my also experience, but of ZERO since like 2004, lol, do try to keep the fruit level as it grows as much as possible; Nothing has made me want to grow a squash more than ones that, in pictures, are level-looking and 'filled' as full as any AG that has been known for its simple beauty - just green! Good luck with that 1109---eg

W w w what? I though you were the downstate squash man if I ever knew of one, Mister, lol---
Oh, I see - It's like when you Google something and there are a bunch of Qs others may have asked; They're usually pretty funny butt very informative, nun the less, lol---
Glen, I have one/a couple of 218*s and crosses made therefrom that will be in my pool of hope-they-sprouts; I recall one being '(Secret Cross A/Patch 2/Beneath Giant W
...X SELF)'
That would HAVE to be a good one! Actually, a nice greenish-grey... Cheers - Eric Gerry

Hi Josh, the last 2 years I’ve grown squash for the first time. I grew a 1429 pound the first year and a 1595 last year. I did everything the same as a pumpkin as I found they’re just like them. I’ve noticed the plants seem to be really aggressive and the growth of the squash itself seems to be faster earlier than the pumpkins but then slows down. I keep the squash covered all year with a sheet. You’ll have a ton of fun with it, they’re a blast to grow! Best of luck!!

No different than old AG genetics, especially seeing as all the modern ones are half 1725 lineage.

Some times it can be difficult to get squash fruit to set if it is hot. Shade the little babies if it is hot.

I use a frozen gallon of water next to the flower and cover with beer cooler. 100% success for me so far.

Are squash more inclined to abort or stop growing due to excessive heat?
