Did anyone else besides Sherry plant the 229.5? Glenn how about you? The 229.5* is 821 Garrell X 703 Smith and was the second fruit off the same plant and was a very late season set for the cross. Remember I kept saying in the winter it would be a good one to grow. Well here is some proof, On Day #10 it measured E-E=30",, S-S=29" and the Circum. was 42.5". Yes that is the right measurement, I measured it 3 times to make sure. 2 Days later on Day #12 it measured E-E=35",,, S-S=35.5" and the Circumference that day was 61". Tomorrow on the 14th is Day #15, so I hope it has continued to grow at this fast rate. Here is another kicker,,, it's on a secondary vine a little under halfway down the main which makes it about 12 feet from the stump. It's on the secondary about 12 feet from the main and the secondary is terminated about 2 feet past it. Just hope if it keeps growing at that rate and that it holds together.
Now I have been afraid to talk about it in fear of jinxing it, so I probably just did and now something will probably go wrong with it. But I just had to tell someone because it has grown so fast, so there it is. LOL
We have been taking a few pics along the way of most of our stuff so I do have a couple pics of the one on the 229.5. It has really impressed the heck out of us. One other thing before I close, that is the only one I will say anything about at this time.

That sounds like one heckuva pumpkin!
But remember, many pumpkins have started out like freight trains, only to fizzle and become average. Someone here recently posted something about a pumpkin growing at a ridiculously fast rate early on last year or the year before, and it eneded up under 200#
There have also been stories of the puny runts early on that roared in to weigh over 1000#
Not to sound like a pessimist, I hope it grows into a monster...but experience has taught me you just can't get excited prematurely, or down in the dumps too fast. A cross that looks good on paper can be a flop in the field, and vice-versa.
I hope it grows you a PB and state record!

I realize the 703 has a rep for green progeny, but you didn't verify its color. Is it GREEN?,chartruce, lime, hunter... orange? what's the color of this fruit?

Southern, your probably right and they will stop growing. You know us people in the South can't grow anyways.
Mr. Sprout, a picture of it has been posted to the photo gallery, so as soon as it shows up you can see the color yourself, but I think its a very nice green color myself.
