1385.5 Jutras 07
After searching the data base on the 1385 Jutras I have to let out a secret of mine that I have kept for a very long time. I simply cannot let this story go untold.
Here goes.
My 1385 grew so large and fast that I was shocked. I had researched heavily during the off-season for just the right seed to grow and settled on Joe's after he came to visit my home.
I used the standard treatments including the new at the time RTI Pumpkin pro stuff from my very good friend Neil. I remember sitting on my front porch talking with him about how fast its was growing as I had just recorded two consecutive over 50 pound days.
The patch tour was the next morning and I was extremely excited. I had a very large monster growing on Hyper Zap Mode. This term was from an old video game called Zaxon. I used it not often but my 1385 was definitely in Hyper Zap Mode that week.
Well the pumpkin was growing so fast that vine management had become a huge chore. The pumpkin was long and slung low to the ground with huge shoulders that jutted out like a hunch back.
The morning of the tour the vine stress was tremendous. The vine began to sing like the tightest guitar string. No longer able to move the pumpkin I reached over the shoulder and grabbed the main vine on the stump end and pulled. Yup it happened. SNAP she went!!! taking with it the whole stump and about 10 sides vines too.
The break was about 3/4 the way through. I quickly tapped it together and cried as I prepared for the mornings patch tour.
Thankfully I still had lots of back growth feeding it but growth dropped off quickly after that. I never told many folks about this. My wife knew as she was stunned at my utter stupidity...
That morning of the patch I left an untold amount of weight in the patch on that pumpkin. It still finished well above 1200 and well over 400" but what it could have been....
