What kind of microscope does it take to see the organisms
in the compost tea? What magnification does one need? Is a 1000 good enough or does it take more?

I primarily use 200x (10x lens, 20x objective), but sometimes like to go up to 400x. I've never used the 100x oil immersion objective when viewing tea samples.

Do you already have a microscope? If not, I have a microscope advisory you should read that was written by a friend of mine specifically for people buying microscopes for this purpose.

Tad:
I have read the one that Tim has on his site. I assume it
is the one you are talking about but if not please send me the advisory. Thanks Frank

P.S. What is the name of your microscope?

The file I'm talking about is the microscope advisory that Tim Wilson wrote. It is available online in the yahoo group for compost tea that is moderated by Jeff Lowenfels. It's too long to post here. Is there a place on the site to post files?

What does A.=250x mean?

I have the Meiji 5310 phase contrast trinocular microscope. I have been very pleased with the resolution and quality of the scope and it has an excellent warranty. It also costs around $4000 and may be more than you want or need.

If you do get a microscope, I would recommend Tim's DVD as a good tool in identifying these organisms. www.microbeorganics.com

I have included a link below if anyone wishes more information. There are several models that are relatively cheap. Quality of some of the cheaper units may be suspect

Dr. Lindermans Answer was 250x

Wiz,
I'll send you a copy right now. You may want to consider getting Tim's dvd if you have microscope access. I think it's the best tool I've seen in identifying the microorganisms. My father took Dr. Ingham's microscope class 3x and I have her microscope manual. Personally, I found the dvd more helpful because the organisms are moving and active when you actually look at them.

Steve,

the link you provided didn't work. I'm guessing it is the same document, from the Yahoo Group "Compost Tea Production and Science" moderated by Jeff Lowenfels. I'm friends with the author of the advisory and he gave me permission to share it with you guys.

The issue was you need a yahoo group id and to be part of the group to see the files section.

Tad,

You are correct. I just tried the posted link & it works because I am still logged in from last night.

It's easy & painless to join but choose your preferences wisely. I prefer to only receive the "daily digest" so as to not get inundated with emails every time someone makes a post.

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/compost_tea/

Click the "Join Group" tab
Follow the instructions.
Log in again.
Find the tab in the upper left "files".

There are a raft of (usually) useful papers for downloading free.
