I am planning on experimenting with a small systen to start. What is a good recipe to use in a 5 gallon system?

Here's a couple of recipes I've listed online:

interesting stuff thanks Tad. Can you use well aged horse manure for your compost in the recipe?

I suppose you could, but I tend to avoid manure based composts for the potential pathogen issue. Not as much of an issue when you're not eating the plant, but you don't want to be breathing it either probably when you're spraying. Horse manure that's been composted would have good bacterial levels and some protozoa, but probably be lacking in fungi.
Best homemade source is worm castings in my opinion.
I think you're on the right track with a small system. Start there, invest in a really good air pump and then add water to your final tea, rather than trying to make up a big batch all at once.
