hi all. I have been getting ready for the growing season and in a previous post i have noticed that people where using some pretty strong air pumps. an example is 51 literes per minute for a 5 gallon pail. I am using a 110 L.P.M. pump for my 55 gallon drum. This is the pump the guys at the local hydro store recommended. the guy showed me his set up using this pump with 2 air stones in a 35 gal garbage can. it seemed to be bubbling fine. So is the pump big enough for my set up? thanks!

pg3,

I don't believe it would be enough air based on the testing and microscope work we've done over the years. Many hydro shops and gardeners make recommendations without ever testing them. I can tell you definitively that you will have a hard time maintaining aerobic conditions in a brewer (6 ppm or 6 mg/l) for the entire brew cycle, if you go below .05 cfm/gal of water.

Ok, thanks. Where do I get a big enough pump? The one I got was the largest one at the hydro store. Thanks!

There are online aquarium stores that should have something. Some brands are aquatic eco or sweetwater for example.
