How cool does a plant and a pumpkin need to kept throughout the season. What's the trigger temperature for shading, misting, etc.? What's cooling strategy?

85degrees.Warmer than that the plant closes its stomata for moisture retention.

What do you use for cooling? Misting, Shading, or both?

Both, we have high temps and high uv and 300ish days/year of sunny skies. Plus a lot of upper 90's during the season.Realised when I started growing that pumpkins dont like high desert/front range colorado environment.

Also being at 5340 elevation we have a daily 25 to 40 degree temp swing.

We definitely had some days in the 90's here last year. I'm thinking of going with misters but since I'm outside wind direction will make it a daily battle.

Visit a few of the heavy hitters in your area. I know at least one grower that uses shade cloth there.Dont know if any use misters or foggers there.

Orange - I've lived in Columbus GA and Tallahassee FL. You should just fill your living room with dirt and turn the AC on. :)

For me, it's survival of the fittest (no misting) except I do shade the main vine tips. I'm more worried about high UV days after a cloudy stretch than the temperature, especially when the plants are younger.
