I may donate my pumpkin to a local University for display with the stipulation that I be allowed to harvest the seeds once it's reached the end of its useful life. Will it's eventual rot affect he seeds?

The problem I have experienced is that seeds start germinating in the warm, wet environment. The longer it sits, the lower the seed count. If it were me, I would set a time limit and go harvest your seeds after x number of days.

I haven't seen such severe seed problems yet. A few seeds is really all you need because only the very top reigning pumpkin will see all of its seeds planted. (ex 2009 wallace 2145 mcmullen). But yeah get the seeds before it rots through and remove it from display before it rots lol.

Its all about Temperature. If its 45 -50 degrees out seeds will keep for months.60- 80 degrees much shorter. if pumpkin is displayed in the shade not direct sun it all plays a role.
