I have one plant that lost the main vine new growth battle in last weeks heat. The cover I had over it blew off and the tip looks fried. It may come back, but looks doubtful today. I'm already pollinated about two secondaries back from the tip. My question is: If I dead head the tip and convert the next secondary back from that into a "new main" will it grow just as aggressively, i.e. aggressively as a normal main?

PS, I've got at least 20 secondary vines behind the pumpkin.

I'd have to say 'Yes' with my limited PB in that if I were to do exactly that, that is the result I would expect. The new growth might not be as thick as the main that was THERE, butt the next section after that probably will be. It's always weird that different vine sections can be differently-sized. eg

In 2020, I forgot a chair over a main vine for a little too long, snapped the tip when I picked it up. I didn't really retrain a new main, just let those secondaries / tertiaries fill in that area.

I pollinated about 4 nodes back from the broken vine. It ended up 2200#.

I think last season everyone was down trodden by to many overcast days in this region. I'd like to have a few of those days back.


Anyway, I'll dead head it and go with the secondary and see what happens.

You can dead head it in a week and if it doesn't come back cut it then or at anytime you know it's fried.. Your secondaries will still grow and can be trained to fill in your space at any time. If main is fried secondaries will pick up what is being pumped forward anyway.
