I wanted to try and grow watermelons this year as well as pumpkins. DO watermelons expand and get alot of vines as the pumpkins? What care do you give them? Any help to my ??? would be greatful. Ryan

I grew giant watermelons one year and got an 80 pounder. Plant didn't take up much area maybe 8'x 10', so about 1/3 of giant pumpkins. I followed same feeding routine as my pumpkins. The watermelon din't have the root growth as the AG's do. I still buried vines though and got small tap roots from under leaf node areas. I kept only one fruit on plant, did some minor vine/fruit positioning, and not much more. Hope this helps. Steve

Watermelons don't require near as much space as an AG. There are many different varieties to choose from, all are pretty tasty. If you want to grow a really big one, use Carolina cross seeds, and prune plant to only 1 or 2 fruits.
