How old does a melon need to be to have viable seed?

That's probably the biggest problem I have with the giant watermelons is getting the melon big enough to get viable seeds. That is why I start the plants so early.

You can tell a viable seed by looking at it generally. They are filled out.

You can also test fire some seeds in the winter and get a germination rate.
