Good question Bill, I reckon its the same as pumpkins, just downsize some. I could surely use some help also. Im gonna try Dunkels on my melon this year..Maybe some of those KY folks will give some input..Croley

PS..bill, I have read that melons need water everyday, someone even said that a noon watering will help to prevent the hole in the middle syndrome!!! Time for an automated watering system??? LOL

i useed Dunkels on 1 of my watermelons this year and yes you are right about the watering at noon watering wayne i had 1 that i diidnt water at noon and it was all mostt holllow when cut open but i all so know guys that use Agro -k with big melons e mail CB if you need anythiing you look like a rookie wayne vic

Im not sure what seeds Im going to grow, just know I have to do better than last year. Any sugguestions?? I have the following: 127 Van Hook, 128.5 Haist, 148.2 Schnecker, 183 Brinkley and 146 James...So...now which one or perhaps I may come across another. I havent done much research on these seeds, but ya never know with Dunkels they say anything is possible. I will accept all help and advise...thanks guys for making feel at home...

I've got an interesting story. I've always used commercial fertilizers. I started plants with higher nitrogen then switched to higher P&K later, and used water soluble fertilizer periodically through out growth. Last year my father in law decided to use only organic fertilizer to see if he could get more consistent growth. He must have used just the right mixture of acidic and sweet compost because his ph was just right. He also seemed to have healthier plants. and better water retention in that terrible drought we had down here. Long story short he not only beat my melons he beat the crap out of my melons. It work well for him last season and I think I might join the band wagon. Was wondering what some of you guys thought of this.

Holloway, can yer father in law use yer computer, and tell us what he did??!! LOL Seriously, I am convinced that a semi-organic regimin is the key to long term success!!! This far south, we almost have to use some chemical pesticides, and fungicides...but the organic fert's, and soil preps are gonna benefit us all in the long run!!! JMHO...Peace, Wayne

I really haven't experimented with it personally, mostly just what I've read. I have a gardening book that says 6.0 to 7.0. I tested mine with a meter I bought at the garden store and it was around 6.5 to 7.0. My father-in-law had alot of compost from oakleaves, grass clipping, manure etc. He mixed wood ashes with it to neutralize it. Maybe there's somebody with a little more experience that could answer the ph question. What is the right phwith pumpkins?

with AGs you need a PH of about 6.7 to 7.0. maybe the same type soil will work for both ...Bill

For some reason in a lot of literature they recomend a pH that is slightly acid for watermelons. Between like 6 and 6.5. Although it seems to me that many growers do just fine with a more neutral pH. Check out Jane Hunts article on The GVGO website on How she grew her 207.6 pound watermelon. Last year I went mostly organic with my giant watermelon. Around here if you can get the melons off and running they can usually fend for themselves. You do have to watch out for the cuke beetles early, they will can kill a young plant pretty quick. Last Year I grew one plant, I got a 136 pounder and a 128 pounder off of it! (I think the weather was instrumental in that success) Our weather was very sunny and dry, the melons loved it. Normally it is much rainier, a week of rain in august will make a melon patch go to heck.
