i have heard old ppl talking about cutting a vine and sticking it down in a bucket and the vine just sucking up the water making for a bigger melon. Can this be done or is it just all talk?

Id say its just talk, it would seem to me that the vine would just rot. Like milk with a pumpkin.

My guess is they were talking about after you pick it. It can help prevent some of the weight loss that occurs after picking, due to dehydration.

When I pick my pumpkins the day before the weigh-off I leave a couple feet of vine on the stem so I can stick the vines into water. They will suck up quite a bit of water after they are picked. Last year I used sealed containers, to prevetn evaporation, with just the vines in and the water level marked. I found they suck up water when the fruit is warm, but don't when the fruit is cold. I assume watermelons will do the same.
