Define side by side? AG grow with really tall foliage, and watermelons are ground huggers and can not grow in their shadow.

Ag's will grow right over the water mellon vines, if not moved or pruned.

i grow my pumpkins is a chritmas tree pattern. I grow them side by side about 25 ft apart. Know in between the plants, where the main vine will end up is where i plant my watermelons.Yes, sometimes they grow together but never really ran into any trouble.
Hope this helps
