Is there a certain distance out from the stump that you should not allow a watermelon grow. Or do you take them wherever you get a nice looking set?

You take fruit where you can. I would like the melons to be closer to the stem, but as I said, you take them where you can. I think the initial shape of the melon is more important then the position, but both are factors.

Pollinate all female melons and then sort it out later.
