This is the first year I've used the OTT, It's ussually a suprise to me when I weigh'em. I haven't picked any of my melons yet, but my neighbor gave me some Charleston greys and jubalees out of his garden to eat. I deciced to check them with the OTT and weigh them. I was very disappointed. Some were nearly 20% lighter than the chart, not a single one was equal to or heavier. I hope this chart hasn't got my hopes up. How has everyones experience been in the past with the chart?

Don't know if it matters but the charts were developed with numbers from Carolina Cross variety....

Yeah maybe there is a density variation between varieties

I find that the OTT tables do not hold up well with smaller melons like a grey. The tables also do not hold up well on the high end, such as melons over 200 pounds. I have a spreadsheet where I track all measurements I have ever taken and deviations from actuals. For large melons the OTT will generally predict about 10 to 20 pounds lite.

I'm feelin better I picked one of the smaller ones in my patch today. It had a small crack, so I figured I better pick it so somebody could eat it. The chart estimated 105 and it weighed 113. I slid it over next to the big one and it looked tiny next to the biggest one. So maybe it will suprise me.

I picked one today that measured 142.5 OTT and it weighed 154. It was a fat melon. Don't know if fat or long melons go heavier on the chart but its got my hopes up for my big ones. I've been keeping track and it does seem that the larger the melon the more the chart under estimates.
