Loyd Bright the current record holder use to have a book but I haven't seen it in his catalog lately. This message board is a great place to find info. And yes carolina crosses are good to eat for a big melon.

Carolina Cross melons are very tastey if caught at the right stage of maturity. You have to realize they take a lot longer to grow than any other type of watermelon. The Brights publish a small pamphlet on growing the big melons I think. You can learn a lot just by going back on this message board and absorbing what seems worthwhile to you.Opinions do differ on some things though;so, sometimes you just have to use commen sense and go with whatever seems best to you.I do recommend you start with the best seed you can find. Also starting your plants indoors for the eraliest start possible will be very helpful. Also,do not underestimate how big these plants can grow.Giving them plenty of room is very important. Proper watering and fertilization are other factors that make a BIG difference.I grow on plastic covered with straw to prevent any weeds. If you grow on dirt you may want to use a preemergent herbicide to curtail growth of weeds that will try to compete with and shade out your melon plant.I hope this helps some.Perhaps some of the others on this forum will chime in.

I have a tips and techniques sheet that I send out with all my seeds. You are welcome to it if you want. Just e-me at james at rconnect.com (put the @ in since that cuts down on the spam I get) and I will send it to you.

I would even be willing to send you seeds from this year's melons. There are directions for sending me a SASBE to get th e seeds.

My children like the taste of the big melons over the store bought melons. Of course here in Minnesota we probably don't know what a great tasting melon is.
