Ok what is "girth" that you all refer to in measurements? Its not the same a our circumference in the "OTT" tables.
The Brights you the word "circumference" in their seed discription which might be the same. Please explain & how to take it. Thanks !

Girth would be like if a person was laying down in bed and someone measured your waist.

I have a cloth sewing tape I leave under my watermelon so I can check that measurement while it is still growing without disturbing it. I don't have much experience growing melons so I don't know if a lot of people take this measurement while they are growing or not.

I think most of us put our watermelons up on boards and so there are gaps where you can get the girth. It is one of the more consistant numbers you can check during the season. Otherwise, you'll have to wait till harvest if you leave it on the ground.

I think girth tells me more about a melon than anything. And yes, I always have my melons up on boards that are placed perpendicular to the fruit. As Dave said, that opens up gaps underneath that you can push a cloth tape through. Unless of course there is a big garter snake curled up under the melon. :-)

I use 3 2x4's in general, so there is maybe 4 inches between boards.

I have commented before that I have never had a melon rot when on boards. Not sure if it's just luck or not, but I used to have 1 or 2 rot each year before I started putting them on boards.

I did have one rot this year, but it did so before it went up on boards, so the record still holds.
