I picked my first and biggest Mountain Hoosier watermelon this evening. It charted 136" for 78.9 pounds. I put it on a good set of bathroom scales and the actual weight was 103.5 making it the bigger than any melon I have grown before this year. I will post a picture or 2 in my growers diary.

Sounds like you are on your way...for bigger and better melons.

Congrats Tennesse that is a pretty melon. I have heard that they can grow several 75-80 pounders per vine. Did you pick them all off but one? Was that your biggest Hoosier? Will be interesting to see if it crossed with your carolinas. My neighbor crossed a Hoosier with Charleston Greys one year the offspring had the spider web coloring like a grey with stripes on top. I thought about planting them in a seprate patch next year. Maybe crossing them with black dimonds or blue rinds.

I hope that one you had me carry up from your patch wasn't that big ! ;) Sure was a good tasting sweet melon. Thanks !

Chris, I'd guess the one you carried for me was about 20 pounds lighter.I rolled the big one up to the front of the house in a wheelbarrow.Seed from the big one were black and I thought that was kind of odd.

Holloway, it looks like I'll end up with 5 or 6 good sized melons from each of my 2 vines of Mountain Hoosier. Yes, that one was the first to set and I'm pretty sure it will end up being the heaviest Mountain Hoosier melon in my patch.I have let these 2 vines set anything they wanted to. I'll save seed for anyone who is interested but I think I'll be planting only Carolina Cross watermelons next year. If you're interested in any seed I'll be happy to help you out.
