Smoky mtn pumpkin indeed had a 239#er in Nashville this morning. It looked like a double wide and won first place & $600. Congratulations Chris. Mine went light at 207 pounds and I was beaten by Chris & by a couple of Freddie Burcham melons to leave me in 4th place. There were 18 entries and I feel pretty good about 4th place in my second year. I just hope I can do as well or better next year. Wonder what some of these growers maybe still have growing to take to Alardt on October 3 ?

There were alot of nice melons there. 18 in all. 300 will happen in the next few years. Its very doable.
Mine was a little light. Taped cir=101.0 side=48.5 end=59.5
total ott=209 so the chart said 252 actual is
239 kent 09 =255 mitchell 07 X 251mudd 08
straight length = 37, girth = 65.5 Big fat & flat !

Dennis Masterson (Tennessee Dreamer) Had a real nice long one & took 4th !

The measurements are in the world record range. That is still a great melon. If I get within 39 pounds of that this year I'll be happy. Will like to see the pics of that one. My biggest one is flat to, so I'm afraid it will go lite. I wish we could find what causes voids. Since I started measuring watermelons, I have had 1 melon go 12 pounds heavy and two dead on, the rest have been lite. Any way congrats to you and Dennis on a great year. Is the 239 Leonard still doing good?

Holloway, yes the 239 Leonard is still there, as is the 213 Kent. Both tape in the 250's ish , but probally filled with alot of air too. Growing very slow now. plants are poor ( too much rain )

Congratulations Chris on the exceptional melon. Can I have a last name for the records? I probably know it, but you are Smoky Mountain Pumpkin to me.

Chris, are you going to Allardt? I probably don't have anything to compete with those type melons, but I would like to see what one looks like.

You have some nice looking melons in your diary Jake. And I think you'd enjoy the festival and meeting the other growers. Come on up and have a good time man.Actually, I'm not positive I'll be there but I am trying to work it out with my employer.

James,I think Chris didn't notice the last name request. It's Kent. I think we may be hearing that name a lot more.

Thanks Dennis,Little boy turn out to be a good melon. What was the final weight on your other big one? I would like to come if it works out. I would like to put some faces with names. Both 255s are measureing exactly the same. I think the second one will end up heavier because the shape is better, buy I don't know. I hope if they don't go lite to get my first 200+.

Jake, Little Boy ended up at 207 pounds. Fat Man went 181 and probably took 1st place at the Tennessee Valley Fair.I'll find out as soon as I go.There were only 4 melons in Nashville over 200 pounds so yours would have been competitive as they pay premiums fore the 5 largest melons.
