This weekend I was working some down at the new patch for next year and noticed there were tunnels where moles have been. There is nothing planted in the patch so I don't know if they are looking for some food or what. My questions is I don't want them anywhere near my melons in a few months so what can I do the deter them from that area. I know of some mole traps and I think there is a plant that you can plant that will repel them. Just want to know what your experience has been with moles. thanks

Yes, I have had issues with Moles. They are bad for the garden and really bad for melons.

I recommend Nash hoop traps. Purchase 3 or 4 of them to use on any new activity and you should get the mole within a day or two. A female moves in and produces a litter. When they get to a certain size she kicks the young out and then do long tunnels just to get away. Once they find a place they like, they start making a network of tunnels that they travel each day looking for worms and grubs. You can step down the runs and then you know when they are fresh.

Attack them hard as soon as you get them. One of the biggest problems beside damage to your roots, is that rain water travels down the mole runs and causes erosion trenches.

They are looking for grub worms most likely. Get rid of the grubs and the moles will probably leave. I've used Grub-X in the past, expensive but works well.

Talpirid (poison gummy worms) has worked the best for me. I don't like the traps because I'm the kind of person who would lose a finger, toe or eye trying to set them. I know of several men who enjoy getting rid of them by sitting on their roof with a beer and a shotgun. Alas, I am afraid of heights. Good luck Eddy!

Thanks guys for the input, Boom Booms idea sounds the funnest, but I think I am going to go with the traps and the Grub-x. It sounds to me to be the grubs there after, during the fall when tilling the chickens would almost get run over by the tiller eating so many grubs. As always thanks

I personal do not use poisons since I have a free range flock of chickens and a black lab that eats everything. If a gummy worm or poisoned peanut was pushed to the surface, he would eat it. If a granular was spread on the lawn, the chickens would eat it.

So I use the traps which are easy to set and frankly, it's rather exciting when it triggers. It's like a tip-up going off for ice fishing.

I have used this talpired;works in 24 hours for me;
I have used every mechanical trap you can think of,not as good as this stuff;
you put in a 3in worm, down his tunnal,cover it.
the next day the worm is gone and so is the mole
he takes it with him down to his nest,and he is GONE.
you will never find him; GREAT STUFF

20 worms for $41 plus shipping and handling? I don't know. Seems like a lot of money without even the joy of seeing the dead animal. I think I will stick with the traps.

I'd be willing to give them a try if they work, but I'd have to agree with MMM nothing quite beats a visual confirmation the little bastards dead. lol
