By reading down the posts it seems like there are a lot of new growers for 2010 including myself.

So lets here if you or someone you know are trying to grow giant melons for the first time.

grown melons on and off since I was a kid, but my 12-year-old daughter wants to go big time. She has went all out this year to grow some big pumpkins and CC melons. She is also growing Black Diamonds. She had a good year last year but the vine borers got the pumpkins early and stunted them severely. Hopefully we learned a lot last year, got several tons of composted horse manure this year and did some major dirt work with the excavator to get the ground full of that manure. So, I guess we'll see what we can learn this year.

Well, I am a 48 year old, and I live in Minnesota. My plants were started weeks ago, but now is not a bad time to get them going.

kypumpkins - Make sure your daughter keeps her pumpkin stumps covered with a remay blanket to keep the vine borer moths away.

I think at the end of the growing season I or someone else should post a thread to see how everyone made out their first year growing cc melons. With all of the great info on this site, we should see some decent results.

This year is so different with having some resources and space to grow; lugging dirt and prepping big Lerio cutaway pots to start things. How long can I hold a watermelon starter in a 3.5 flat Lerio nursery pot, or a 5 gal reg?

Ejab, I would not bury the vines, causes rot and all kinds of problems. Although they will root at the nodes. Look up under "HOW TO" section and Minnesota melon man has a great tip sheet. Follow it and she will have great success. Wish her the best of luck.
