How do you tell which way they will run ? In pumpkins, it the direction of the 2nd true leaf. Didn't seem to work that way last year with the melons. Any rule to go by ?

I planted mine on an angle leaning east. Most of the wind comes from the west here due to buildings and terrain. I think that it will act as a natural guide until the vines get long enough to stake (providing we don't get frost tonight). These vines don't seem to be as brittle as AG's so training to the direction you want to go shouldn't be to hard. I hand several twisted up last year by a F-1 tornado, I gave up, then the leaves turned toward the sun I was back in the game. That storm eliminated 6 AG's

I agree that one can train them anyway they want fairly easy. I just didn't want to do 180 degree turns like i did last year !

Chris, If you expected them all to run the direction opposite the first true leaf, and you had to turn them 180 dergees, would it be safe to say they all ran in the same direction as the first true leaf?? Or did you notice other directions too? I THINK in the past I planted with intentions of vines running opposite first true leaf and to the best of my memory all went that way. I also transplant in the patch with plants at an angle towards the way I thought they would run, opposite first true leaf. We'll all have to pay more attention to this detail this year and see what we learn...
