Yesterday I wanted to set my melon plants out for some sun. The vine on my biggest plant is close to 3 ft. long and I didn't want the wind to be whipping it around, so I decided to stake it down to a box that had been supporting it the past few weeks. Well the stake decided to go through the box very fast and one of my fingers hit dead center on the main vine crushing it. It is still attached, but you can see the inside of the vine. So far the part beyond the smash seems to be doing ok.

Is it best to leave it alone and see what happens ?

I have had them heal over after being smashed. I have also cut them and had them shoot out new vines in my thought it could go ether way.

Frankfort Oh

I`d like to suggest you cut the vine behind the crushed vine ,because if u dont ,it will just cause u problems, and the vine will heal itself, and shoot new ones that aren`t damaged, thats just what I`ve done in the past ,yell it`s going to hold u back alittlebit, but in the long run it`s worth it.

I read that Jane Hunt did just as you mentioned Rob, and she grew the Canadian record at one time. I decided to put it out in a hoop house last night. The extended forcast looks decent for the next several days. Once it seems established I will probably cut it and see what happens. I have several backups ready to go also. Actually I will eventually have 2 plants per hoop house in a few weeks, and cull the weaker plant down the road.
Thanks fellas,
Lee
