this is my first year growing watermelons.one aborted last week but i have a new one started today.do i cover it like i do with my pumpkins and keep it out of the sun?it is the size of a pickle right now.do i wait till it gets bigger before i cover it?thanks....

Yes, cover them. I use mini hoops made of .5 in semi-rigid black irrigation pipe, from Lowes, with a portion of tarp stretched and clipped. I wait till its my keeper to build the hoop. Wouldn't hurt to shade now.
