The amazing node root photo that Holloway posted made me curious as to how deep big watermelon growers have good soil , naturally, or by your own efforts at improving it? What is considered the minimum acceptable depth of good soil for competition cc patches?
Thanks for any and all replies.

Wide and shallow. Every time I dig them up most of the roots are within a few inches of the surface, but spread out nearly as wide as the plant.

I agree, mine is about 8-10 inches deep, then heavy clay. i use raised beds & that helps. the roots are very shallow
so much deeper may not help except for drainage.

That's all good news. Thanks. I was looking at Holloway's photo wrong, thinking that those roots had gone straight down.

They rooted straight down but then turned to the side
