I was trying to measure one of my melons, when I spotted a guinea wasp nearby. I swatted at it with the tape measure a time or two, but it kept trying to come back. It suddenly occurred to me to look fairly close near the ground around the melon. Sure enough two or three were parked on a spot not 4" from the melon. Those were the ones I could see. It was God's good grace I didn't provoke an attack. Looks like they've formed a nest with 2 1/2" sides so far.

I'm afraid to spray it with wasp and hornet killer. If I just leave the nest, it will likely get worse.

What should be done to get rid of them?

Yoshi,
If you are going to kill a wasp nest, you need to do it at night when the whole clan is in the nest. Since you don't necessarily want to hose the area down with high pressure hornet spray, I would take a 12 oz juice can and spray the inside of that and manuver it over the wasp nest until its covered and leave it for a couple of days. When you take the can off the critters should be gone/dead!

Don't spray wasp spray on any melon leaves. Dr. Ligget told me a story 2 years ago that he saw a SVB on his pumpkin and sprayed the leaf it was on he said the leaf collapsed and died right away.
