well all in all this has been a great year for me . first year growing giant watermelons and cantaloupes. i got a 45.2 lb. cantaloupe and a 131 lb melon i'm happy . this forum is great i have learned so much from all of yall. i'm looking forward to next year . i spent this weekend laying out new ground for the 2011 season. layed out 11,000 sq. ft. i'm allowing 500sq.ft. per plant . thats 22 plants for next year. i only grew 3 this year. thanks everybody .

I had six plants this year, and it worked me to death. Not to mention the expense.
I've wondered is it best to have fewer plants with extra care, or to play the numbers and plant big? I guess in the perfect world, plant big with extra care.

weeds were my main enemy this year. i'm going to spray and till until i'm ready to plant . should have weeds under control for up coming season . plus irrigation system . also cutting back on my regular garden . my wife and i are still canning!!!! planted way to much stuff this year . don't know what i was thinking!! i can use that extra time for melons.

7 plants here, way too much if you giving them extra care & doing everything by hand. You would probally enjoy it more at about 5 plants . IMHO

I almost think that unless you are in the business, it's best to limit how many you put in. Especially if you are doing full soil replacement under the stump. But assuming that garden prep is a little easier, like if you just run a manure spreader over the garden and then just till it in. It would be fun to put a bunch of plants, and then yank the ones that didn't produce really nice long females early in the season

Anything more than 10 plants and you better have some help.

we used to have a wholesale nursery in houston. had 5 acers
under greenhouse cover it has taken me 7 years to even want to grow another plant really enjoyed this year. i actually grew 9 melons this year plus cantaloupes giant and other. 6 of the melons i just grew a give the melons away too friends and family plus a big veg. garden . cutting way back on veg. garden .want to spend that time on melons. plus the area i'm planting this next year is a new area .
