I guess I will have to live vicariously through you guys. I am still looking at cold rainy weather and I fear the growth may have greatly shut down.

The plants are still green and pretty healthy for mid September, and the melons look great for color. I am just going to keep holding in there.

For you SMP, I would hold out as long as possible if you are getting any growth. If your plants look good and the melon is at least growing slightly, and you are in spitting distance (or past) the world record, it just seems you have to go for the gold.

Kirk, yea i know. Mine last was 98 days old but had stoped growing at 83 days. It rotted through at 103 days old. I guess as long as its growing i'm ok. Its doing better & the plant is way better then last years. FINGERS & TOES CROSSED !

I don't think there is a person on this forum who would advise you to do anything other than go for the world record. How exciting! And I am also sure everyone is pulling for you to get it. Well, except possibly for Lloyd. I know he'd get over it though. I think he would probably congratulate you and try his best to get the title back in the coming years. We have been wanting to see a new world record watermelon for several years & we will all just have a little higher goal to shoot for when you get it.

Kirk, while some in the garden could be weighed with the right equipment, there is NO way this one could. Just have to wait i guess.

I read that perfectly fine. "...but a barking dog close to your ..." seemed perfectly fine for me. I have a 130 pound lab that keeps all creatures away from my garden, and I have a 4' welded wire fence that keeps a 130 pound lap away from my melons.

Yes, i have seen my dogs get the coons & possiums, it not pretty or neat. Don't need them inside the patch.

I'm very excited about Bear Wallow this weekend. the one i'm taking is about 244 now. If it goes heavy like the others, i'll feel real good about the big one !

9/14/2010 1:17:33 PM

Moss Hill Melon Man

Trinity River Bottom

is it normal for your melons to go that heavy on the chart?

9/14/2010 1:53:54 PM

if (big if) it goes heavy like the other the WR will fall this weekend.

9/14/2010 2:05:55 PM

Smoky Mtn Pumpkin (Team GWG)

sevierville, Tn

Nope, best i ever did was 8 lbs light, worst was 16 lbs light.
I don't think i will get 30 lbs heavy. Its not as fat, only 63.5 girth last i measured.

9/14/2010 2:44:18 PM

Smoky Mtn Pumpkin (Team GWG)

sevierville, Tn

I better elaborate this.
I'm taking the 178 mudd to bear wallow, was 244 est & 63.5 girth last measurement.

The big one has an unknown girth. Wont know that till i pick it, but its in the 60's.
