My question is, is it vital to have the actual watermelon level when growing to avoid splitting? As my Garden is on a side hill and I take great effort to get my pumpkins growing on a level area so they have less chance of weight stress splitting. As often they have odd shapes but Watermelon have a more uniform shape so can they grow on a slight angle?

I've never seen a melon split that was set during the normal time. Late, late sets might. Hard to grow in east TN without being on a slight hillside.
Your question makes me wonder, if the blossom end is downhill would they get longer and/or have fatter blossom ends?

I know it sounds silly, but I also worry about the melon sliding downward. I have grown melons at slants, and they are always troublesome. I prefer nice and level.

i have one thats on a hill, no problem as long as its parallel to the slope. So it wont try to roll !

I`ve never had to worry ,about this problem untill this year ,so I leveled out the ground aorund the melon ,another words just built up the soil to make it level or at one end ,I put foam on the low end untill level ,but I personally think level is better ,because it helps with the uniformity of the shape of the melon.
