My boys and I want to try to grow a good sized melon next spring. If it's doable, I would rather have 10 or so seeds from something with good potential, than one or two really "important" seeds. That said, we are open to trying anything and have room for several plants. Thanks for any consideration.

I was hoping that offers for Mt. Hooisers and Nice CC's would come up. I would not have any seeds to offer and I know you really don't care, but I would be glad to send a small box of something like "gift quality" California navel oranges with the sasbe if you would like them?
That offer is to John and ga.beeman too, and with that we should be great on seeds. I will try to encourage another grower with any leftover seeds and give credit to where they come from.

Yes, just send away and I will send you some seeds from my 193, which I believe had the best plant structure I have ever seen in my garden, and from my 149.5 which had the largest girth of any melon I have grown. Had it only had some good straight length it would have been impressive.

I should comment that you do not need to send me anything in return. I just like seeing new growers start up and be successful. If you want to share something from the garden, then a few seeds of something you are proud of and it doesn't have to be watermelon or pumpkins, always makes other people's garden more interesting.

I have grown seed from England, France, Italy, and of course that weird place called the US. It fun to show off the giant beans, or giant cabbage, or really hot peppers that have been sent from somewhere.

Of course in this day and age it seems to amaze people that you can grow something that they thought only came in stores.

As for numbers of seeds, I always make sure there are at least 10 seeds in each package. It helps to have some numbers when you don't always get the best germination.

I know there are people that need to feed their family and the like, and use selling seeds as the mechanism. I do not need to do this so I make any all seeds available for free in order to increase the number of growers and quality of the fruit grown. This is self serving since I know that these improved genetics will come back to me eventually.

I will be bold and speak for Superman Kent in saying that being at the top of the mountain only really counts if the mountain is high enough.

Wayne, I have read a lot of posts on the site. You are IMO one of the best of many good ambassadors. I am going to grow watermelons as seriously as I can and pumpkins half measures if at all, thanks for the cantaloupe offer though.

Just thinking about what James said about sharing seeds today, I think anyone who gave me a seed is entitled to half the seeds back from the fruit it grows... or if it is a good cross and they want them, even if it is a world record! How about the guy who provided the pollinator? Just in case it doesn't convey;I AM joking around about WR potential from my patch...but not the seed thing.

I think I will put in a new request for some of brother Dave's amazing peach trees since this is working so well!

Russ, this fairly new melon board shows the giving spirit that built this site...initially!!! JMHO!!! This board, and the Lope board are full of folks willing to give!!!Not limited to just seeds, but critical info also!!!! Not that the AG community isn't full of VERY giving folks, but the growth of that community, has led to pressure to fund weigh-off's & clubs, that has led to the rise in prices of the best seeds (low seed counts has also contributed)!!! It's awl good tho...anyone serious, about growin an AG,True Green Squash,Long gourd, Melon, Lope, Mater, Sunflower, or anything else in the realm of Giants, can come to bp.com & find seeds for the price of a bubblie!!! Wayne, I just figured that since watermelon growers are mostly in the south the "spirit" just had something to do with Southern hospitality! As you say though there are so many great people all around and in the middle too.

Maybe the stakes are higher with AG's because it is the largest fruit in the world?

The profit motive, where it appears, doesn't really bother me. Everybody has to, or had to make a living somehow.

I have seen Minnesota Nice first hand a couple of times but never heard of the term. Back when we used to build more houses in Californina, I worked with the younger part of a father son excavating team from Minnesota. They were both really nice people.Come to think of it, the father would bring extra equipment out and speed things up for free,even when I was paying the son by the hour. They went back home now...He said he could get work in a union. I hope so.

Hey Rustico, Dennis's Hoosiers are definatley worth planting. I had one rot at 110 that was still gaining good.
BTW MMM it was the first I ever had rot on 2X4s. But still definately the best method.

Yes, I figured putting them on boards wasn't full proof, but you certainly can't say anything about the results. I suspect I will have one rot sooner or later myself. It just hasn't happened in the last 5 or 6 years.

I am glad you guys are happy with the seeds I sent.I hope they grow some super melons for you.As far as taste goes for the Mountain Hoosiers, I can honestly say I can't recall eating any better melons than these were.Wow, so that was homegrown fruit you sent to me. Thank you so very much for that! The amount you had to pay for postage seemed terribly high though.I wasn't sure what to do with avocados. I ended up cutting them up into a soup I made.So if you are able to grow citrus I would suppose you could just about grow melons year round out there in San Diego.I bet MMM is probably about ready to come out there and live close to you after the kind of winter they are having up there in Minnesota this year. I kind of like being here close to where the world record was grown though.

Dennis, I hope you let the avocados get ripe? I actually live in a rural place 45 minutes outside of San Diego called Jamul and pronounced Ha-mool. My place is at 2000Ft...and we do get a little snow once every decade or so. Summer gets a little hotter than Sieverville... I think. July and August average highs here are 89F(it often gets well over 100F). The big difference is that we get no rain from mid spring to fall. Any time James is in the neighborhood, he is welcome to dig up a patch and give it a go.

Seed package arrive from Minnesota, let's just say I am really impressed! Wow. Thank you James. Please tell your better half her suggestion to increase the allotment of seeds was greatly appreciated. Weird, but the cabbage strikes me as something that could be fun to grow.

I am really looking forward to growing some of the seeds you all. One of my kids former teachers is possibly going to give it a shot too.

I doubt they will try to grow something giant at school,not sure though. They have a school garden and a small group of teachers who are enthusiastic about getting the children involved in growing,composting, etc. This is K-3.

We actually have a more seeds now than I will be able give away since I will look for at least a bit of likelyhood that they will get grown...and these men given us a lot of seeds. I did notice that in a round-about-way some of them came from your family and I appreciate that too. Hopefully, by the end of the season I'll be digging out some seeds from those melons to share.
