Are watermelons just smaller versions of pumpkins or do they require different growing techniques? I assume fish, seaweed, mycorhizae are good? I"ve heard watermelons like sandy soil.

I think watermelons are bit easier...I don't cover my melon vines...if i goof on melon..I have time to set another one.where in past I lost my pumpkin.my melons do like sand .

Watermelons are susceptible to rot, so sandy soil provides good drainage. Of course if you get reasonable rain throughout the season is doesn't matter. If you get excessive rain you understand quickly why sand is a nice thing.

Don't walk anywhere near the stump unless you have walking boards.I dug my stump up last season and followed some of the roots for quite a way. It turns out, I was walking on roots about 5-6 foot away from the stump. The soil got very compacted from walking over it every day, which is never a good thing.
So, yes I will treat my melons the same as my pumpkins this comming year,by using walking boards.
