I think there are probably many Carolina Cross watermelons that have been grown in the last few years that are capable of growing record setting watermelons. We save and tend to plant the seeds from our biggest melons. We share our best seeds with our fellow growers. Most all of us then grow seeds from proven melons. And we cross them with other proven melons. Luck, weather, growing know how and many other factors determine if we grow a true giant. Many 239 Leonard seeds have been grown but only a single one of these has produced a world record. All the other 239's had the same genetics and capability. Chris was the one who got everything right and produced the record. I just believe that there are thousands and thousands of seed out there from many different melons that have the genetic capability of growing a record if all the right factors come together. We will all continue to grow seeds from the largest melons. But a much smaller melon that has those same great genetics is just as capable of growing a new world record melon. The parentage is a lot more important than the weight of the melon you are taking seed from.

I agree TD, it's all gotta come together. I guess we all choose the seeds we plant like the AG growers. The seeds that have grown past WR's are most sought after. Seeing how there are only two seeds that are possibly available that have produced a WR, and one of those almost impossible to find, we turn to seeds that have grown over 250, like most of us have chosen on your dream patch thread. After that I guess it's the crosses we like that we'll pick. Myself I think Chris' 291 and 230 could be great seeds, a cross of those two WR producers...

Yeah the 157 Bright & 168 Johnson are 2 of the best seeds out there,But the future little ones when were growing 450 lbers & up will be the 230- 291 & 239.Melons will hit 500 lbs in the next 10 years.Put em in the freezer if you want these little breeders in 10 years.

Well I can appreciate what Tennessee Dreamer had to say but the rest of us have to take what we can get! After three years of doing my best to improve my soil and improve my methods I am hoping that I can grow a great Watermelon. I have had limited sucess growing watermelo9n but as I said beggars have to take what they can get. Another thing he said is that many 239's were planted but Chris is the only is the only one who struck gold. Personally I think I have got it right to grow a winner. So if you have quality seeds I am interested in growing them for you!

Pumpkin Farm, although some of the most popular seeds are hard to find, the next hot seed is awaiting planting. There are alot of growers on here who have made crosses from proven seeds that are waiting to be planted. You never know which one will be next. There may even be a great seed that never sees dirt because there are so many good ones out there now. Methods of growing and alittle luck are just as important as a great seed too. Shoot me an email at inrock30108@aol.com I'll see if I can help.
