Does anyone know the background on these:
221 Carson 97
182 Carson 99
191 Carson 91 (is this one off a 262 Carson)

Yes brotherdave the 191 is 1st offspring of 264 carson. I am trying that one also. Jerry

That 191 offspring would have been from the the 262 Carson as that was the world and Tennessee record Bill set. There was no 264 Carson. Chris Kent's 264 was a new Tennessee state record last year until his 291 was weighed in at Elkin. :0)

The first time the melon was weighed in at 264, 2 or 3 days after the melon was reweighed at 262. If it was your melon what would you say? IF the melon was mine it would be a 264. I just called it what the melon weighed the first time sorry for the confussion.

Sorry, no I haven't heard that story. I believe I would be compelled to call the melon whatever weight it was weighed in at.If Chris' 291 had weighed in at 292 the minute he picked it and was down to 291 by the time he had driven it to Elkin and had it weighed then would he be referring to it as the 292 Kent world record? I think not! :0)

Chris 264 last year was weighed in at the Tennessee State Fair in Nashville last year and was a new state record. I suppose you think he only tied the state record though since Bill Carson had a 264 also, LOL.

If we all went by what our personal scales said, there wouldn't be much need to take them to weigh offs would there? Maybe we could all just take in pictures with a little sign beside the melon stating what it weighed. I had my 181 in a cooler at the local Kroger's for a few weeks before I took it to the Tennessee Valley fair in Knoxville. I am sure it weighed several more pounds when it was picked. I never considered getting my own weight because I knew I would have to refer to it as it's official weight; not whatever my bathroom scales said.LOL

I think the bottom line is we all need to go by official weights and not our personal ones. Otherwise there would be too much confusion.

Of course there are times when we have to use our own weights.Bill Edward's 285 may be such a case. I am not sure where that one was weighed. But certainly for melons that never make it to a weigh off; we have no choice but to use the weight we determine ourselves. Really, wv, don't you agree we need to use the weights that are listed in the record books? And if you can show me a 264 pound weight in a records book for the world record Carson melon I will immediately offer you my humblest apology.

Linden, Mi.,

Yes it hurts,I weigh in patch with a certified scale, some times I can keep the same weight, and other times I will lose weight, but I agree we should go with weigh off weight. I cut and weigh Friday night, weigh off Saturday morning. Yes it hurts when you lose just enough to make a difference. Yes it hurts but keep it fun !!!!

I have been told the exact same thing about the Carson former record. By the man with more knowledge about watermelon genetics than probably all of us combined. But yes TD, I agree official weigh in numbers should be used, nothing else...

Dwight,I only know what I have read.I am certainly no expert. I was just saying what seems fair to me. I shouldn't have said anything in the first place, as I really thought the 264 number typed in by wv melonman was probably a typo. I am sorry if I offended anyone. To keep the game on a level field though; we all need to refer to our melons by official weight, and not by a weight we obtained in some other manner.

Dwight, I honestly don't remember ever reading or saying anything about a 264 Bill Carson melon. I forget a lot sometimes. Will you kindly direct me to the thread on this forum so I can refresh my memory?.I do recall talking to Chris about his 259.2 (2009)after the Allardt site listed it as a new Tennessee state record.I knew Bill Carson had the record at 262 pounds & I don't think Chris wanted to be known for something he didn't do.For myself, records are hard to come by and I wouldn't want the prestige tarnished by facts that have been misunderstood or misconstrued in any manner.

Dennis, Jerry is correct, I was told the same story about the 264/262 carson. I believe thats the truth.

I am glad the story is real. I just don't remember reading it myself or commenting on it.

Dewight,I apologize to you.I was reading fast and getting carried away.I thought you were saying I had referred to a 264 Carson melon. You said no such thing.Perhaps you were talking about Chris' knowledge of the story.I will try to slow down and digest the information better next time before I reply. Again I am sorry. TD

I think the 262 was weighed at the fair which was the official weight.

No apologizes necessary TD. I have noticed when you try to look at genetics that were produced prior to the internet, it can get confusing. Heck, it can even get confusing now days...

Hi friends, a good source tells me the carson melon was weighed on certified scales the first time, the problem was he did not have the proper witnesses for the Guinness criteria for record status. The melon was weighed 5 days later on different scales that were certified by the Tennessee Department of weights and measures and had the witnesses to meet the criteria for record status. The first time it weighed in at farm store. The second time i am not sure were ,it could have been same store,my source said it was not the fair.Chris is most likely the first to ever to weigh a world Record at a big site. Thanks Jerry

When i made the post brother Dave was looking for information on the carson melons so i thought he would like to know the melon weighed 264 at one time. I never called it the 264 carson world record nor do we call the 285 Edwards, (the world record 285 Edwards) even though it could've been. Brother Dave did not ask about what the melon weighed. Sometimes i talk when i should not, sometimes i do not talk when i should, not perfect yet i am still working on it. Thanks Jerry
