After trying to germinate a single 20 year old Carson seed, and it did, I will now store all mine in the freezer.

Wow,ten years seems a long time for seed viability.That is wonderful. With the right kind of controlled storage I think someone could be germinating your seeds in the next century Dave. That is, after you grow the first 400 pounder to make those seeds really in demand.

does takeing them in and out of the freezer hurt them much due to temp. dropping???? i want to put my seeds in freezer but find myself always looking at them alot and playing with them when i see a seed someone needs if i got it or not lol pizza

I think it could hurt just a small amount. I think it would probably be insignificant damage but I am just guessing.What good is a seed collection if you can't take it out and look at it?

I have taken my seeds in and out of the freezer for the last 16 years. Several times a year.
I still get very good germination. Dont see a problem.

More important IMO would be ensuring that they are completely dried before putting them into the freezer as any moisture in the seed that expands when freezing could damage the embryo.

Put seeds in tiny zip locks,then place in perscription bottles,with them individually packed you can open bottle while still in freezer & remove the 1 you want,No temp.change takes place.You can put several little zips in each bottle.I have my doctor saving bottles for me.I told my wife to get those food packages out of my freezer!lol

I'm for freezer storage also. Once completely dry as JD stated. I sure would like to see Mr.Edwards' collection of seeds. I bet it's impressive...

I germinated some eatting watermelons seeds last summer from 1994 that were stored in the freezer. I have been told that it is better if the freezer is not auto defrosting. With that being said mine were in an auto defrosting. I believe it helps in auto defrosting to put them in the middle so they are not next to the walls when it defrosts.

I've put each envelope in a vacuum sealed pouch. I hope that doesn't matter.

I have heard that vaccum sealing works great. If I remember correctly Mr. Hurley does that.
