Hey Mark,I noticed a bit of yellow around the outside of your melon leafs. I think you can correct this by spraying them (especially the undersides of the leafs) with a good all purpose chemical fertilizer such as Miracle Grow. They are usually able to get enough balance through the leaf stoma to correct the problem. I hope this helps.

yeah I was wondering about that yellow,I hate to fertilize such a young seedling,I pulled plastic off house today, the rain should give it what it needs, will fert in a week or so.Like Ken Sweet says the goodies are in the soil,so dont want to over do it,Thanks for feedback though!!

Mark, from what I have read, a melon takes in very little of it's total nutrient needs from foliar feeding. But they will take in enough to correct a nutrient deficiency.Anyway, I was having the same problem this spring and the foliar feeding seems to have corrected the problem for me.

Just my 2 cents here, although I do agree with applying an even fert that has the 3 old faithfuls "N-P-K", with all of the rain that we have been getting, soils can start leeching nutrients fast, but.... sometimes we automaticly feel that yellowing of leaves is a nitrogen deficiency, most times it could be, but magnesium deficiency displays itsself in a very similar way.
Magnesium is one of those really important but often over looked nutrients, it is critial to plant growth:
•Magnesium is part of the chlorophyll in all green plants and essential for photosynthesis.
•Magnesium aids in Nutrient uptake control
•Magnesium is a Carrier of Phosphorus in the plant
•Magnesium is both an enzyme activator and a constituent of many enzymes
•Magnesium Increases Iron utilization
Without making this an ad for products, I would highly recommend applying a product that will replenish the micronutrients such as Microtech CT, it will provide the micronutrients that most of the chemical ferts do not contain. Microtech CT will provide:

4% Nitrogen
3.5% Chelated Iron (Fe)
1.5% Chelated Magnesium (Mg)
0.75% Chelated Manganese (Mn)
4% Sulfur (S)
0.75% Chelated Zinc (Zn)
0.15% Boron (B)
0.003% Molybdenum (Mo)

Both of the products together will give that plant all of the nutrients it needs to thrive.
Mark, give me a ribng and I can recommend another great product that will keep the mag and calcium ratios where they should be during the season.
Thanks,
Tom

Well in all fairness I did add a little epsom salts and some chelated iron to my water. So those may have been part of my "cure".

The yellow is from lack of water,I havent used cables in like 12 years,I wasnt watering enough with ground temps at 74- 80 degrees!Air temps were hitting 90.You better be mighty careful putting any kind of ferts on melon seedlings, you can fry them in a new york minute!!
