Looks like I might be at the stage where I need some sand to
support the younguns.

How big should the melon be when changing over to something else, and what should be used to replace it?

Just don't wait until the melons are too heavy to easily get the job done. Some growers use boards. I sometimes use a sheet of plastic.

Are the plastic sheets you use any particular type? Where would I go to look for them, and what should I ask for?

put some sand under it now. Get it out of the ruts. Cut off the water flow thats causing the ruts.

That's a tilled furrow that the plant deposited the melon in. Are furrows a bad thing for a plot to have if raising giant melons?

As for that particular photo, I have placed sand under it and brought it up some.

Yoshi, I have black plastic garbage bags under a couple of mine right now. I put straw on top of the plastic to keep it from heating up so much.As there is no air flow under the plastic, I think boards would work better. I am just trying to cut costs.
