Think I understand why rotating melon sites is so important. Question is: If I move 50' uphill from 2011 sites, is that far enough? If not, how far? TIA, Clutch

Vine crops should rotate with say corn,or beans, what is in spot now 50 feet up hill! These melon roots grow 50 feet from plant by end of season!I would go at leeast 100 feet if space is there!

Hey Handy, 100' x 100' equals 10,000 sq feet.And you've got yours in a little greenhouse. What's up?

50' uphill from present site is "new" ground---been in pasture or lawn for 30+ years. Can't go much above the 50' mark and still keep melon roots on my property. Thanks for quick response. Regards, Clutch

As long as its new ground you should be fine. So 50'=yes
Now why the need to rotate ??

Mostly to change my luck and because the UT Extension guidelines advise rotation. Regards, Clutch

Im lost TD??My greenhouse is 1000 sg feet if I move it to other end of property it doesnt mean everything in between will be garden also.I think thats what your saying I was just telling Clutch The ideal move, knowing it might not be possible!Rotating crops is a good way to stop disease issues & such, my best looking kin is in a virgin Spot 1592 platte but still borders patch!I feel Im under a microscope TD if I say anything its picked apart!!No lol

If you amend soil Every year & add organics Microo & such, Rotation not needed!! I still got Virus on 1362 spending over 400$ on goodies!

I apologize Mark. I sure don't want to make you feel bad. I enjoy your off the wall humor too much for that.Maybe I'm just sensitive since your melons are growing better than mine. I still think my early set on the small Boyette vine is going way larger than 40 pounds. I'm thinking over 100 easy.I think the only reason I chose to keep this melon was to prove that you're not right all the time. The vine is still quite small and not growing very well. The melon is slow but steady. I think all I have to do is keep the vine healthy for a couple of more months and get it growing a little better. We will see.

Thanks HH. Looks like you are well on your way to a great season. If I manage to catch you it will probably be real late.If we don't f... up I think we are both on our way to at least a new personal best. Heck, you will probably have that sometime next month.
