She brought this rookie up short. While traipsing thru a decimated plot of sweet corn (last night the raccoons played leap-frog over my low-slung electric fence)I stumbled (literally) over a watermelon lurking among the shredded shucks. This "renegade" is as large as any of my "TLC" melons and 10 days (+-)younger. So much for my having any impact other than covering the seeds.
...my wife says "don't you go near that watermelon with any of your fancy shenigans.

Sometimes the late sets come on really strong. To say it has been uncared for may be wrong. Is it not getting the same nutrients as other melons in your garden? I would think it is growing in the same fertile soil and the roots are being fed the same as the rest of your vines.The same cared for leaves are growing this melon that are growing the other melon on the same vine. I think that just because it's growing out of sight doesn't mean that it isn't getting most of the benefits that your other melons are getting.
