To check out Big Daddy and verify it is being grown in Alabama. If this melon is solid with no hollow spots and it continues its current growth rate for a few more days, It could be a special melon. It slowed down for 4 days but its now back to 1/4 in a day, last OTT was 210 five days ago currently its at 62in girth, 38.25in length, estimated OTT 214 give or take.

At what point do I start guarding it 24/7

Handyhomegrown, The seed line is from the 2005 bright 246, in 2007 it crossed with my neighbors Sun Moon and Stars. Its kinda cool looking, a Carolina Cross with yellow stars on it. All the melons I have grown since 2005 have been heavy about 10%-15% according to the OTT scale. The rind on the blossem and stem end is very thick and about 3 inches thick in the center. Keeping my fingers crossed.

This is not my best melon, Swamp Melon #2 is 45 days old, 54.5in girth 36in length and an OTT of 188. In the last three weeks is has went from 145 OTT to 188, thats smokin..

Well Handy, I stand corrected, you were right. If his melons goes 10 to 15% heavy, then Cliff has atleast 297 and at 15% he's around 310lbs. Great melon Cliff, reguardless if heavy or light, thats a hoss!

Cliff- I would be surprised if the melon is hollow. The seed melons from that year had large girths. The largest in 2005 was 66.5 inches. Bill Edwards' large melon from that group of seeds had a girth of 68 inches if I remember correctly. You should have an extra good melon. The temperature change this week should be helping too.

NP, I have several hundred freezer kept seeds from the 2006
132lbs, 2007 195lbs, 2008 199lbs , 2009 189lbs. I will donate some to the GWG for auction.

Jerry, It's getting pulled Friday, it's still growing about 1/5in a day or about 3lbs. It is now about a pride thing and busting the state record. I retire next year and will start concentrating on the world record then.

I hope to you Sat.

Am I looking at the right picture? I don't see yellow stars.....also the melon with the cig pack on it...is that the one? It doesn't look like a 101 inch circumference to me....am I looking at the correct melon or is the photo deceiving my eyes?

1320, the stars are small there are two on top, they would be hard to see in a picture. I will get some close-ups later today. The pics are of the same melon, look at the one dated 15 AUG for a better perspective. the melon is almost 40in long

Mark is absolutely right. We grow these melons just to see how big we can get them. And you are still getting nearly 10 more pounds every 3 days. It might be severely hollow or something and you could lose in this ultimate endeavor for superiority. But if you wait say 10 more days for another 30 pounds, you'll be practically guaranteed a new world record and the first person to break 300 pounds. There is immortality for a feat like that my friend. You will always be recognized as the first grower to ever go over 300 pounds. Just as Lloyd Bright will always recognized as the first grower to go over 200 pounds.Think about it my friend!

Isn't 48" SS a little small for a melon pushing 300 pounds? I believe the 291 was about 68" in girth. Do you have a final SS # on that melon Chris?
