I just cut a brown seeded open pollinated melon from my 211 Dawson. The melon was a healthy but arguably small 98 pounds. I noticed a few immature white seeds as seem to be present in most melons. What I found that was odd to me though, was two different sizes of mature seeds.Most of them were large, as most Carolina Cross seeds are. But there were a few dozen that were a lot smaller; a little bit bigger than the size seed a grower would expect out of a Sugar Baby. My question is, is this an indication of pollination from different plants ( I grew the only watermelons in the area as far as I know but had 15 different Carolina Cross plants)or to just what would you attribute 2 distinct size seeds in the same melon to ? I have seen Carolina Cross seeds that were small in size but all the seeds I planted this spring were of normal size. Thanks for your comments.

I guess one thing I would like to know is, have any of you readers had a closed pollination with 2 distinct size seeds from the resulting melon?

Had a few small seeds in two this year that had a mature appearance. Both were controled crosses. I culled the little guys.

my 259 from 09 was open pollinated & had both small & large seeds in it.
